Read the excerpt from the prologue to act II of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Which lines convey the idea that Romeo a

nd Juliet will fight for their love despite the obstacles?
CHORUS:
Now old desire doth in his death-bed lie,
And young affection gapes to be his heir;
That fair for which love groan'd for and would die,
With tender Juliet match'd, is now not fair.
Now Romeo is beloved and loves again,
Alike betwitched by the charm of looks,
But to his foe supposed he must complain,
And she steal love's sweet bait from fearful hooks:
Being held a foe, he may not have access
To breathe such vows as lovers use to swear;
And she as much in love, her means much less
To meet her new-beloved any where:
But passion lends them power, time means, to meet
Tempering extremities with extreme sweet.

The lines that convey the idea that Romeo and Juliet will fight for their love despite the obstacles are these: "But passion lends them power, time means, / to meet / Tempering extremities with extreme sweet." In the preceding lines the narrator is relating that Romeo is not in love (with Rosaline) anymore. Now he loves Juliet, and she loves him back. However, they are supposed to be enemies, so Romeo must complain to her and cannot court her properly, and Juliet must fear him and cannot meet with him when and where she wants. In spite of it, their passion and their love give them power, and time gives them the opportunity to meet, making their obstacles more enticing due to the intense delight that they will experience after overcoming them.

Which statement best states the claim, or main point, that Bacon builds upon in this passage?
Montano1993 [528]

Part A was which statement best states the claim, or main point, that Bacon builds upon in this passage?

A. Holding high office causes people to do evil.

B. Holding high office is one of the noblest aspirations.

C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

D. Holding high office helps people serve others in many ways.

Answer:

C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

Explanation:

The statement that best states the claim that Bacon made in the passage is the third statement because it shows that holding high office comes at a great cost and that highly placed powerful people are really servants, both to the state, fame, or business which takes away a degree of their freedom.

Therefore, the correct answer is C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

Why were Americans, including President Jefferson, unable to to treat Haitians as “brave and courageous human beings"?
Cloud [144]

Answer:

:The Haitian Revolution and the subsequent emancipation of Haiti as an independent state provoked mixed reactions in the United States. This led to uneasiness in the US, instilling fears of racial instability on its own soil and possible problems with foreign relations and trade between the two countries.

US president Thomas Jefferson realized the revolution had the potential to cause an upheaval against slavery in the US not only by slaves, but by white abolitionists as well. Southern slaveholders feared the revolt might spread from the island of Hispaniola to their own plantations. Against this background and with the declared primary goal of maintaining social order in Haiti, the US attempted to suppress the revolution, refusing acknowledgement of Haitian independence until 1862.

The US also embargoed trade with the nascent state. American merchants had conducted a substantial trade with the plantations on Hispaniola throughout the 18th century, the French-ruled territory providing nearly all of its sugar and coffee. However, once the Haitian slave population emancipated itself, the US was reluctant to continue trade for fear of upsetting the evicted French on one hand and its Southern slaveholders on the other.

Against this, there were anti-slavery advocates in northern cities who believed that consistency with the principles of the American Revolution — life, liberty and equality for all — demanded that the US support the Haitian people.
