Read the paragraph. Carefully maneuvering his skateboard through the neighborhood, Gino headed to the community center. He was m

eeting his friends there to study for a Spanish test. His notebook and textbook were in a cinch sack on his back, and he wore headphones to listen to music on the way. What Gino did not know was that his friends had decided to have a small party to celebrate his upcoming birthday. They arrived before him and anxiously waited with a cake and cards. Meanwhile, Gino rounded the last turn, nodding his head in time with the music while thinking about Spanish vocabulary. Based on the evidence provided in the paragraph, what is the best prediction? Gino will earn a good grade on his Spanish test. Gino will be unable to find the community center. Gino will be surprised by his friends’ plans. Gino will play music for his friends.

Gino will be surprised by his friends’ plans.

According to the paragraph, Gino thinks that he is going to study for his Spanish test with his friends. His friends are going to surprise him with a birthday party. He does not know that they are planning the party so Gino will be surprised. We don't know if he will earn a good grade since he will be partying instead of studying. He seems to know where the community center is, and we don't know if he will play music.

Reflect and Respond Comparison to Today Consider the barbaric punishment that Hester Prynne faces for her sin. By today’s standa
lianna [129]

Answer:

I wonder if you could disagree. Say the punishment of wearing the scarlet letter is much less barbaric than the stoning that she might have suffered under mosaic law.

Explanation: Adultery destroys the love and trust that form the basis for a happy marriage. It causes the breakdown of families. In previous centuries, stable marriages and families were the basis for communities and civil society. Anyone who caused disruption undermined the common good. The punishment served as a deterrent.

In today's culture of pleasure-seeking and lack of commitment to long-term marriage, it may seem harsh to punish someone for "doing what comes naturally." But look at the consequences. Single parents who can hardly support themselves and their kids. Kids constantly in visitation switches between parents. Unplanned pregnancies and abortions. If adultry were less tolerated, family and community life would be more stable.

Both Wiesel's All Rivers Run to the Sea and Spiegelman's Maus relate events of the Holocaust
Inessa05 [86]

Answer:

A) From a Jewish survivor's perspective.

Explanation:

In All Rivers Run to the Sea, Elie Wiesel tells us about his own experience under Nazis oppression and gruesome treatment of the Jews. He is a Jew, a writer and a survivor of the Holocaust, so in his work, we can experience the very essence of what was going there. Though his works made him famous, he said that those honors are a burden because he would rather like that his sister Tsiporah stayed alive, that Holocaust did not happen and book left unwritten.

Artie Spiegelman used his father Vladek`s vivid memories for writing Maus. He made hours and hours of interviews which included prewar, war and after war period. Vladek with his first wife Anja were first sent into segregated neighborhoods (ghettos) and then going through several Nazi camps. They tried to escape several times, but always unsuccessfully. In that time they had a young son Richie who they sent to a different ghetto to be with his aunt, but after she found out about sending them to the camp, she pois oned her children, Richie and herself. After the war, Anja was deeply disturbed and she committed sui cide. Vladek continued his life, but haunted by terrible past.

Read the excerpt from "The Role of Social Media in the Arab Uprisings" by Heather Brown, Emily Guskin, and Amy Mitchell. In July
Anon25 [30]

Answer:

Research related to the popular use of social media in Egypt.

A statistic supporting the claim that social media use in Egypt is not widespread.

Widespread testimony about how social media use has changed in Egypt.

Explanation:

These are the three options that explain the types of evidence that the authors used in this excerpt.

First, the authors talk about the popular use of social media in Egypt when they argue that the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project has looked at this information.

Second, the authors employ a statistic that supports the fact that social media is not widespread when they say that 65% of people do not use the Internet.

Finally, the authors use widespread testimony when they argue that most people who are online use social media to learn about the political situation in their country.

However, the authors never talk about how social media changed after the Arab Spring.
