Bezzdna [24]

The original meaning (and still the formal meaning) of 'queer' is actually 'strange' or 'weird'. The excerpt is probably from a few decades ago or was written/spoken within a formal context. The new, more common meaning of 'queer' was born from old beliefs of a prejudiced society, where homossexual people were considered to be 'weird', therefore it's a pejorative term, and it's generally not received well by the homessexual community. As the word 'gay', which originally means 'glad', but with time had its meaning changed first colloquially, then gramatically ('glad' does not imply a pejorative connotation, however).

So the meaning of the stanza wouldn't change it the words mentioned were used intead.

Select the correct answer from each drop-down menu. (please select one of the options in parentheses, each possible answer has "
LuckyWell [14K]

The correct answer from each drop-down menu are the following ones:

The article "The Melting Arctic" attempst to win over public opinion by making use of persuasive techniques. One such technique is the use of scientific data , which relies on proofs, graphs, and charts. The article also relies on expert opinion, which involves the endorsement of an idea or opinion by a renowned professional in that particular field.

In contrast, the NOAA video uses visuals of animals to appeal to the viewer's emotions. It makes passionate claims about the worsening Arctic conditions and the adverse effects they have on animal life.

The linking word "in contrast" indicates that what is about to be introduced should be the opposite to whas has been said. Consequently, as the first paragraph talks about scientific data, the second one should appeal to the opposite of that, that is, emotions and beliefs. "Passionate" is the only adjective in the examples that has a positive connotation that can be put together with the first option ("emotions").

melamori03 [73]

The Rosetta stone is the code that revealed the mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphics allowing to the archeologist and to the scholars to read and interpreting inscriptions and reliefs like texts and tombs in a modern understanding. Thomas Young has shown first, then the French scholar Jean-François Champollion that provide the foundations of many information on the ancient Egyptian culture.

Finally in 1799, soldiers of Napoleon’s army found the Rosetta stone near the town of el-Rashid (Rosetta). Later, the stone became British property after the Treaty of Alexandria (1801) and has been presented in the British Museum since 1802.

Read the excerpt from The Odyssey.
SSSSS [86.1K]

Answer:

O They believed that the gods often punished people for acting badly.

Explanation:

Homer's epic narrative poem The Odyssey tells the journey of Odysseus from after the Battle of Troy and his journey back home to Ithaca. The whole book covers the decade long journey, along with numerous encounters with the gods and monsters alike.

The given excerpt from Book IX of the poem is when they were treated with great winds by Zeus after they attacked and killed the people of Cicons. Odysseus admits that from that point onwards, their journey was met with numerous natural obstacles that the god Zeus seemed to have sent to 'attack' them, punish them for their bad deeds. This event shows that the ancient Greeks believed that people were often punished by the gods for any bad acts or deeds they may have done.
