You have a round pie plate filled with water. You carefully release a drop of red food coloring in the center of the plate until

the water is faintly red. After waiting for a long time, the dye molecules in the pie plate will: A. Continue moving in the same manner as when the drop was first placed in the water. B. Slow down, because they have moved to a lower concentration area. C. Stop moving, because they have reached equilibrium. D. Speed up, because they are farther from other dye molecules and have more space to move.

Answer:

C. Stop moving, because they have reached equilibrium.

Explanation:

Diffusion is the process whereby molecules/particles move from a region where they are highly concentrated to that region where they are less concentrated. This movement follows the concentration gradient i.e. difference in concentration that forms between the two regions. This movement continues until an equilibrium is attained in both regions i.e. equal concentration of the molecule.

In this question, a drop of red food coloring was released in the center of a plate containing water until the water becomes faintly red. The water gradually changes to red because molecules of the dye are moving from high concentration areas to lesser concentration areas. However, when an equal concentration is attained i.e. equilibrium, the MOLECULES WILL STOP MOVING.

Alkaptonuria is an infrequent autosomal recessive condition. It is first noticed in newborns when the urine in their diapers tur
Arisa [49]

Answer:

See the answer below

Explanation:

Let the disorder be represented by the allele a.

Since the disease is an autosomal recessive one, affected individuals will have the genotype aa and normal individuals will have the genotype Aa or AA.

Since the four adults are carriers, their genotypes would be Aa.

                    Aa x Aa

Progeny: AA 2Aa aa

Probability of being affected = 1/4

Probability of being a carrier = 1/2

Probability of not being affected = 3/4

(a) The chance that the child second child of Mary and Frank will have alkaptonuria = 1/2

(b) The chance that the third child of Sara and James will be free of the condition = 3/4

(c)

(d) If someone has no family history of the disorder, their genotype would be AA.

                 AA x aa

                        4 Aa

The chance that a child with alkaptonuria will have an offspring with alkaptonuria if the child's mate has no family history = 0

(e)

(f) The chance that a child with alkaptonuria will have an offspring with alkaptonuria if the child's mate has no family history = 0

A grown tiger began its life as a single fertilized egg. Explain why a tiger looks so much different as an adult than it did as
blsea [12.9K]
A tiger looks so much different as an adult than it did as a single fertilized egg because it developed through different stages from being a zygote (fertilized egg), to becoming an embryo (where it experiences intense cellular changes), to becoming a fetus (where it gains a great measure of cell specialization, and develops distinct tissues and organ systems). After birth, the tiger still undergoes further growth and development into adulthood. This is largely regulated by the expression of different genes at different times and also by environmental factors.

Which of the following is primarily responsible for limiting the number of trophic levels in most ecosystems?
solniwko [45]

Answer:

(B) Energy transfer between trophic levels is almost always less than 20% efficient.

Explanation:

The ultimate source of energy on the Earth is the Sun. The energy coming from the Sun is captured by green plants by the photosynthesis. During photosynthesis sun energy is fixed into chemical energy (carbohydrate). So, in an ecosystem energy flow is unidirectional (from sun to the green plants). The fixed chemical energy from green plants is transferred to the herbivores then to carnivores through food. When one organism eats another organisms, only 10 % of the energy present in the organism is transferred as a food for the next organism and a large amount of energy is lost as heat into the environment. Thus, energy keeps on decreasing when stored energy moves from producers to top consumers. Thus, less than 20% energy transfer limits the trophic levels in most of the ecosystem.
