You are performing a fruit fly cross similar to those that Morgan performed. Unfortunately, you forgot to write down the parents

of your cross. You count the progeny, and find you have 40 red-eyed males, 80 red-eyed females, and 40 white-eyed males. Assuming that all genotypes from this cross should have equal survival rates, what are the genotypes of the parent flies?

Answer:

Female: X⁺X⁻

Male: X⁺Y

Explanation:

  • The ruit fly eye-color gene is linked to the X chromosome.
  • The allele expressing red color (wild) is dominant over the allele expressing white color (mutant)
  • F1 Progeny: 40 red-eyed males, 80 red-eyed females, and 40 white-eyed males

Red-eyed males--> X⁺Y

Red-eyed males--> X⁺X⁺

White-eyed males-->X⁻Y

Being X⁺ the one that expresses red eyes and X⁻ the one that expresses white eyes.

  • Individuals with Red eyes: 40 males + 80 females = 120 red-eyed individuals
  • Individuals with white eyes: 40 males

This is a proportion 3:1 ----> 120 red: 40 white

There were red and white-eyed males, which Suggesting that the female parental was heterozygous for the color-eye trait, giving one X⁺ to 40 males and X⁻ to the other 40 males.

While the parental male was red-eyed. If it was white-eyed, then white-eyed females would have appeared among the offspring.

Parental) X⁺X⁻   x   X⁺Y

Punnet square)        X⁺        X⁻

                     X⁺    X⁺X⁺     X⁺X⁻

                      Y      X⁺Y      X⁻ Y

F1) 1/4 X⁺X⁺

    1/4 X⁺X⁻

    1/4 X⁺Y

    1/4 X⁻ Y

    2/4 red-eyed females

    1/4 red- eyed male

    1/4 white-eyed male

    3/4 red-eyed individuals

    1/4 white- eyed individuals

The rate of O2 production by the light reactions varies with the intensity of light because light is required as the energy sour
kupik [55]

Answer:

The correct answer is option a.

Explanation:

Yes, the light reactions also depend upon the Calvin cycle. Calvin cycle refers to a phenomenon that is used by the plants and algae to convert carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into sugar, the food needed by the autotrophs in order to grow. The plants rely upon the Calvin cycle for food and energy.

In the given case, the rate of oxygen production would get diminish as the rate of ATP and NADP+ generated by the Calvin cycle diminishes. Of all the outcomes of the Calvin cycle, ADP and NADP+ are the only ones that get utilized by light reactions.

The ADP and NADP+ are used up by the light reactions to fuel their reactions. This illustrates that if the rate of ADP and NADP+ generated by the Calvin cycle diminishes the production of oxygen by the light reactions also diminishes.

Maggie's Plant Experiment In this exercise you will read the following scenario and identify the parts of the scientific method
ANTONII [103]

Answer:

Please find the identified steps of the scientific method below

Explanation:

A scientific method is a series of steps that aims at solving a problem. The steps in a scientific method include:

1. Making observation: In this experiment, Maggie observed when she read that some plants grow better if the soil is acidic. This is her observation that led to the scientific question: Do plants grow better in an acidic soil?

2. Formulating hypothesis: Hypothesis is a testable explanation to a problem. In this experiment, Maggie's hypothesis is; IF acid is added to the soil, THEN plants will grow better

3. Test hypothesis: the hypothesis is tested by conducting an experiment. In this case, Maggie places two geranium plants of the same size in two pots. Then she added a tablespoon of vinegar to one of the pots and allows the other grow normally without acid. The independent variable in this experiment is the vinegar added while the dependent variable is the height of the plants. The plant group with the vinegar is the experimental group while the plant group without vinegar is the control group. The constants of this experiment are same sunlight, same amount of water, same location etc.

4. Analyse data: The growth of the control and experimental plants were measured every week for five weeks by measuring their heights. The height (cm) of the plants with vinegar for the five weeks as as follows: 10.0, 12.4, 14.8, 18.0, 21.4 while the height in cm for the plants without vinegar for the five weeks is as follows: 10.0, 11.5, 13.0, 15.7, 17.8.

5. Conclusion: Based on the result, the plants exposed to vinegar grew better each week except week 1, which is the week they started. Hence, the hypothesis of this experiment will be ACCEPTED because the experiment proves it.
