Thomas Paine was a political writer who fervently supported the American Revolution. In this excerpt from his popular work Commo

n Sense, Paine uses an analogy to refute a common Loyalist claim. The first king of England, of the present line (William the Conqueror) was a Frenchman, and half the peers of England are descendants from the same country; wherefore, by the same method of reasoning, England ought to be governed by France. Which claim has Paine refuted? The American colonies should join Britain in any future war against France because the colonists are of English descent. Britain should govern the American colonies because the colonists are of English descent. France should govern the American colonies instead of Britain because the British king is a descendant of a Frenchman. The American colonies should not trade with France because of the ongoing war between France and Britain.

The claim Paine refuted is the claim that Britain should govern American colonies because the colonists are of English descent. If you haven't, read Common Sense. It's an awesome read, and actually isn't too hard to understand, even if you aren't used to reading old English.

The correct answer is B) Britain should govern the American colonies because the colonists are of English descent.

The claim that Paine refuted is "Britain should govern the American colonies because the colonists are of English descent."

English thinker Thomas Paine published the famous pamphlet "Common Sense" on January 9, 1776. In that document, Paine invited and urged American colonists to support the independence movement. In his document of 47 pages, Pained argued the reasons why the colonies should be independent. His ideas impacted many people and echoed throughout the 13 colonies. The pamphlet sold approximately 500,000. And for that time. absolutely could be considered a best-seller.

Generalizations, Conclusions, and Inferences (Part 1) Determine if each statement is a reasonable generalization that can be mad
mezya [45]

Inference is a logical conclusion based on the information provided, while generalization takes that conclusion and applies it to other similar situations. Based on those definitions, we can determine if each of the statements is a rasonable generalization or not.

"The sibling rivalry is due to the arrival of a newborn baby in the house" is neither an inference nor a generalization. There is no indication in the text of a new baby.

"The speaker is from a large family" cannot be inferred either, as the narrator only mentions one sibling.

"The speaker loves the brother" is a fair inference based on the text. The narrator mentions that her brother means the world to her, so this statement is a logical conclusion.

"The brother gets into trouble often" is not a reasonable inference nor generalizatino. The only information provided is that he insists on reading his sister's diary.

"The speaker believes others feel the same way as the speaker about their diaries" is the only reasonable generalization. The narrator assumes that by telling her brother her diary is boring, he won't want to read it. That he is only interested in knowing her secrets. Therefore, she thinks others view diaries the same way she does.
