Uncle Bruno was visiting us from Germany. On his first morning with us, we had already cleared the breakfast dishes by the time

he came into the kitchen. So he began searching for something to eat. "There is nothing good in any of these kabinetts!” he complained. Finally, he picked through the bowl of fruit on the kitchen table. "I guess I’ll have an apfel,” he said. Then he leaned back in his chair and put his hand on his forehead. "I think I have a fieber. I’m going back to bed!” "This is going to be a long visit,” my mom whispered to me with a wink.

Answer:

1. Which word provides a clue to the meaning of kabinetts?

Searching

2. Which consecutive letters does apfel share with its English cognate?

a, p, e, l

3. Which phrase provides a clue to the meaning of fieber?

forehead

4. What is the English cognate for fieber?

fever

Explanation:

1. Searching shows he was looking for something. He was in the kitchen. When you are looking in the kitchen for something you might want to look in the <em>cabinets.</em>

2. He is looking for food and what food sounds like apfel? The answer is apple. What letters do they have in common? a, p, e, l.

3. Forehead signifies he might be feeling to see if it's warm because he may not be feeling well. Which leads me to the next question.

4. It's fever because, if you look at the explanation for 3 he touched his forehead and after that, he says, "I think I have a <u>fieber.</u> I'm going to bed." This shows he was either tired or sick. Since he touched his forehead, he was probably sick with a fever.

Which of the following correctly describe biographical details of George Gordon Lord Byron? Select all that apply.
Lynna [10]

Answer:

1. Born with a clubfoot.

2. He came into his inheritance at the age of ten.

4. Many of his contemporaries, with the notable exception of Shelley, disliked the man and his work.

Lord Byron was a British poet, peer, politician and one of the most important figures in the Romantic movement. Byron was a good friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley, fellow poet, and his wife, Mary Shelley, author of <em>Frankenstein</em>.

Byron was also born with a clubfoot, and inherited great fortune and land early on. The incorrect statement, however, is the third one. Byron's title was inherited from his great uncle, the "wicked" Lord Byron, when he passed away in 1798. This made him the 6th Baron Byron of Rochdale and owner of Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire.

Which sentence has a misplaced modifier?
monitta

Answer: The sentence that has a misplaced modifier is A. Excited for a bone, Erika told the dog to sit.

Explanation: A misplaced modifier is a modifier that has been incorrectly separated from the word or phrase that it is modifying. In that way, when it is present in a sentence, a misplaced modifier ends up modifying another word or phrase and making the sentence illogical. For instance,<u> in sentence A., "Excited for a bone" is a misplaced modifier since it is incorrectly modifying the noun "Erika"</u>.<u> "Excited for a bone" should actually be modifying the noun phrase "the dog"</u>; otherwise, the sentence does not make sense.
