How do Herr and Caputo use imagery to show the conflicting emotions that people face when they are at war?
Luden [163]
Philip Caputo wanted the romance of war, bayonet charges, and desperate battles against impossible odds during the Vietnam War. hilip Caputo imagined himself charging up a beachhead, like John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), and this led him to join the Marines to fight in Vietnam. Michael Herr commented on the performance of `grunts' when they knew that there was a camera crew nearby and how they imitated the stars of war movies. So powerful were cinematic images of battle that soldiers acted as though they were on the screen according to Herr.

Match each conflict with a related theme statement.
Kay [80]

Answer:

1. Odysseus has his men tie him so that  he will resist the call of the Sirens. --> With strength and planning, one can  resist temptation.

2. Odysseus's men forget about going  home after eating the lotus. --> Temporary pleasures can make  people forget their long-term goals.

3. Odysseus longs for home even when  happy with Calypso and Circe. --> Exciting new places cannot replace  home's comforts.

Explanation:

1. The call of the Sirens was supposedly irresistible. Once a man listened to it, he was dragged by them into the ocean and, consequently, died. However, Odysseus plans in advance. He asks his men to tie him so that he can hear the call, but not drown trying to reach the Sirens. He will force himself to resist temptation.

2. Odysseus and his men are struggling to go back home once the Trojan War is over. However, when the situation gets better, the men forget about their goal, content with the temporary pleasures they are experimenting.

3. No matter how happy and comfortable other women may make him, Odysseus always longs to return home to his wife and son. Even if the world has more exciting and new things to offer, the feeling that there is something missing is constantly there, guiding Odysseus back to his family.

Read the excerpt from The Tell-Tale Heart. It grew louder, I say, louder every moment!—do you mark me well I have told you that
lianna [129]

Answer: indecisive about killing the old man.

At this point in the story, the narrator is about to kill the old man. He has opened the door and is staring right into the old man's eye. He realizes the man must be really scared, as his heart was beating very loudly. The sound of the man's heart made him nervous, and he struggled to carry out what he had planned. This shows that at that moment, he was indecisive about killing the old man.
