Answer:

The first rain was the most heaviest rain all over. It ran for about 2 hours very heavily. Many people who are very poor and stayed in slam areas, were very badly affected. They lost all of their shelter. They lost their living area. All the farmers were very happy because they thought if the rain has started so heavily, there crops would grow more beautifully. Many people were drowned or taken away by the rain. Many people had lost some of their family members. There were kids that had lost their mom and maybe even their dad. The first rain of the year had brought much suffering upon the people of the land.

svp [43]

The two parts of this excerpt from W. W. Jacobs's "The Monkey's Paw" show that show the White family doesn't believe in the talisman's power are:

"Sounds like the 'Arabian Nights,'" said Mrs. White, as she rose and began to set the supper.

The 'Arabian Nights' were stories made up by the narrator Scheherazade and told to the King over 1001 nights so that he would not kill her as he had done with so many other women in the past. In this way, it signifies that Mrs. White believes this story to be a made-up tale.

and

"Don't you think you might wish for four pairs of hands for me." Her husband drew the talisman from his pocket, and all three burst into laughter

Mr. White is jokingly asking to be given four pairs of hands, something that isn't sensible or realistic, because he does not believe in the power of the talisman to grant wishes. In the end the three burst in laughter as they do not take the talisman, or the story of it's power, seriously.

No one knows 100% if Aunt Amanda and Uncle Robbby are truly happily married except for themselves. They could just be putting on a facade in front of the family to make it seem that way.

Which of the following choices best describes the syntax in this quotation?
vampirchik [111]

In this case, the main sentence has an embedded clause at the end:

"<em>I think </em><em>that ’twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon</em><em>.</em>" (embedded clause in bold.)

This embedded sentence is <u>complex</u> as it has one independent clause ("<em>...the white men will be in a fix pretty soon.</em>") and a dependent clause ("<em>...that 'twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North...</em>")

The main sentence presents a simple syntactic pattern: S.V.O. (Subject-Verb-Object), as it contains a mono-transitive verb ("<em>think</em>") which requires a direct object following it ("<em>that...</em>"). The subject of the sentence is the personal pronoun "<em>I</em>". This S.V.O. pattern is present in sentences much simpler, such as "<em>I think this</em>" or "<em>I like that.</em>"
