. An oil refnery is located on the north bank of a straight river that is 2 km wide. A pipeline is to be constructed from the re

fnery to storage tanks located on the south bank of the river 6 km east of the refnery. The cost of laying pipe is $400,000ykm over land to a point P on the north bank and $800,000ykm under the river to the tanks. To minimize the cost of the pipeline, where should P be located

Answer:

The point P should be located at 0,51 Km from point B, to minimize costs

Step-by-step explanation:

The oil refinery ( point A ) the opposite point ( B) in the south bank, and the storage tank (point C) these three points shape a right triangle. Let´s call x the distance between point A and point P ( the arriving point of the pipeline in the south bank ) then:

Cost = cost of pipeline in-ground* ( 6 - x ) + cost of pipeline in water* L

where L is the hypothenuse of the right triangle  ( A , B , P )

Cost ($) = 400000 * ( 6 - x ) + 800000 * √ 2² + x²

C (x) = 400000* ( 6 - x ) + 800000* √4 + x²

C(x) = 2400000 - 400000*x  + 800000* √4 + x²

Tacking derivatives on both sides of the equation

C´(x) = - 400000 + 800000* ( 2x)/√4 + x²

C´(x) = 0         - 400000 + 1600000*x / √4 + x²  = 0

- 400000* (√4 + x² )  + 1600000*x  = 0

- (√4 + x² ) + 4* x = 0

- (√4 + x² )  = - 4*x

Squaring both sides

4 + x²  = 16*x²

15*x² = 4

x² = 4/ 15

x = ± √0,27

x = ± 0,51

We should dismiss the negative solution

x = 0,51 Km

The point P should be located at 0,51 Km from point B

What number should be added to both sides of the equation to complete the square? x2 + 3x = 6 (StartFraction 3 Over 2 EndFractio
Alex73 [517]

Answer:

\frac{9}{4}

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

x² + 3x = 6

To complete the square

add ( half the coefficient of the x- term )² to both sides

x² + 2(\frac{3}{2} )x + (\frac{3}{2} )² = 6 + (\frac{3}{2} )²

The number added to both sides is (\frac{3}{2} )² = \frac{9}{4}

Well we overall have two different equations we can make here with two different variables. If 35 & 20 were to be our daily charge, and y is our per mile charge, we can infer that x times y is equal to our overall car-rental price, so if we set it out correctly, our equations should be

Drupady [299]

Answer:

a) Total cost = 49 + 38.75m

b) Total cost = 149 + 38.75m

c) The graphs of the lines are parallel and both has slope of - 2.5

d)Difference in total cost = $132.5

Step-by-step explanation:

Total cost , TC = Initial membership fee + monthly charges

a) TC = 49 + 38.75m

b)TC = 149 + 38.75m

d) 149 + 38.75(6months) = 381.5

49 + 38.75(12months) = 514

Difference in total cost = 514 -381.5 = $132.5

Determine the equation of the line that passes through the given points (if you have a graphing calculator, you can us the table
vladimir2022 [97]

Answer:

d. y = -2×

Step-by-step explanation:

First to solve find the slope using the formula, \frac{10+10}{-5-5}. The slope equals 20/-10 or -2. Then plug the slope and point, (-5,10), into slope-point form. y-10=-2(x+5), then solve for y. This gives you y=-2x+0 or y=-2x.
