The fact that Mead’s job as a writer is not considered as a profession is the clearest idea that he is the most unusual person in his society.

Further Explanation:

The society in which Mead resides is a futuristic one, forming a part of the television centered world, where the importance is given to building robotic vehicles, rather than repairing decaying civic amenities. Leonard Mead is a citizen of this robotic world, and he is the only person who enjoys the beauty of the city by strolling through its streets at night. He says that he is the only person to have appreciated the beauty of the city at night. From the onset of the novel, Mead is introduced to us as a person who stands out in an otherwise television dominated society, as he is the only person who has a profession of writing, and this was not considered as a profession. Mead’s simple action of walking in the night has been understood as unusual, and it needs reform.

Mead is an example of a misfit in television society. His actions, which would otherwise be considered as perfectly normal in the present world, was considered to be an anomaly in the television world that he inhabited. The other residents generally remained cooped in their homes, glued to the dominant means of entertainment. While the actions of the other citizens remaining within their homes to watch television are deemed as normal, Mead’s leisurely activities carry a dangerous connotation within the dystopian society. This causes the police to question his sanity. Thus we see how appreciating the beauty of nature is equated with an abnormality, and how the importance of intellectualism has been reduced in society.
