The most interesting artifacts discovered from an ancient Mesopotamia are the objects known as cylinder seals. These were impression stamps, frequently quite elaborate and complex in design, used throughout Mesopotamia. These seals were used by their keepers on strands of leather or other material around the neck or wrist or pinned to a garment. The authenticity or legitimize a business deal as one signs a letter was the reason or the purpose for this was to serve as a personal signature on a document or package. The seal was followed onto the wet clay of the document as an official, required signature.
