The West Coast is directly exposed to the Cold California current, which, despite the name, moderates the climate, and prevents it from being either too cold or too hot. It's an effect similar to the Humboldt Current in South America.

The East Coast on the other had, is parallel to the Gulf Stream, wich starts in the Gulf of Mexico, passes by Florida, traverses the Bermuda Island, and contuines its way upwards until the Iberian Peninsula. But its influence over the Eastern United States is low.

The East Coast is therefore more exposed to continental conditons, which tend to be more extreme. Besides, in winter, it receives some Artic Winds, not as much as the Great Lakes area, but enough to make temperatures drop below freezing for much of the season.
