Dramatic irony is a form of irony in which the audience is aware of something that the characters are not.  

In Romeo and Juliet, an example of dramatic irony is when Romeo thought Juliet was dead when he poisoned himself, but the audience knew she was alive. 
This is considered dramatic irony because the audience was aware of the fact that Juliet was still alive, but the characters in the play did not.
