The correct answer to this open question is the following.

The difficulties I think might arise when trying to understand ideas from the past, especially when those ideas are so different from our modern thinking are that people cannot understand the circumstances that were present in past events in order to understand the meaning of those events. If we want to understand how and why things happened in the past without knowing those circumstances, then our view would be biased or incomplete. Primary resources show a complete picture of the period they are from but in a partial way. You have to connect the dots, the stories of that time in the past to have the full perspective of the events.

The example would be the following. If you try to understand the reasons that led to the American Civil War just from the perspective of the southern states, your information would be biased. You have to know both sides of the story to have the full view. Again, understand the circumstances will help you to get the right idea.

I believe that the way we socialize, and express our thoughts and ideas currently would greatly impact our understanding of ideas in history. I don't think that one would fully be able to capture and show the differences in past and present social interaction. One of the most common idea being presented in today's world is technology, the latest generation has grown up knowing all the ins and outs of modern technology. This is a concept that would've been foreign to people 80 or more years ago.

hope this helps!

a great democracy has got to be progressive or it will soon cease to be great or a democracy.

Ideally, the foundations of democracy should be derived from the people. The people--as a collective entity--is always changing. That's in a general sense. America as a full fledged democracy is arguable just because we elect representatives to choose further up the food chain. On the other hand, that can be considered democracy in play in itself.

An example of progress in democracy, formerly marginalized people would add into the collective people.

The more input, the greater the people beneifited, the more impact, the greater the society.

Why do you think Plato felt he could not have a career in government?
Marrrta [24]

Plato contends we are all made of the same three parts yet not all have the parts aligned in a healthy balance. The result is that greed, ambition, and foolishness rule in these unbalanced people. Plato lived through the democratic period in Athens' government and through the oligarchy period when the conquering Spartans installed the wealthy oligarchists as rulers of Athens, a move that unleashed a fierce retribution of bloodshed upon the unseated democratic rulers.

Plato rejected the rule of the mistake prone and seemingly unreasoning democratic faction and equally rejected the oligarchic rule of the retaliatory wealthy elite. After a period of seclusion, Plato wrote the Republic. In it he describes human nature and uses human nature (as he described it) as a metaphor and template for a reasonable government.

He assigns ruling authority to those who have a functioning alignment and balance between their three constituent parts and a dominant dedication to the highest: (1: lowest) love of money (laboring and merchants classes), (2: middle-most class) love of honor (military), and (3: highest) love of wisdom ("scientists, scholars, high-level experts, and similar sophisticates" [Jorn K. Bramann]).

His idea is that the two models he has seen don't work, so a third is needed. That third model is to make a government out of those who have the best minds by virtue of being best trained, best informed and best balanced (in the quote below, take note of and understand the "or"):

Until philosophers are kings, or the kings and princes of this world have the spirit and power of philosophy, ... cities will never have rest from their evils. (Republic)

Whose actions did not challenge the racial status quo during the 1940s?
Katena32 [7]
Strom Thurmond did not challenge the status quo.

Thurgood Marshall argued cases like Brown v. The Board of Education before the US Supreme Court, and later (in 1967) became a Supreme Court justice -- the first African-American justice to serve on the court.

As president, Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981, which abolished racial segregation in the US military.

Jackie Robinson was the first black player to play in Major League Baseball.

Strom Thurmond was a US Senator from South Carolina who sought to protect the status quo against the civil rights movement.

According to sinclair, why are the waste barrels not cleaned more often?
Leto [7]
The correct answer is : Under the system of rigid economy which the packers enforced, there were some jobs that it only paid to do once in a long time, and among these was the cleaning out of the waste barrels. Every spring they did it; and in the barrels would be dirt and rust and old nails and stale water and cartload after cartload of it would be taken up and dumped into the hoppers with fresh meat, and sent out to the public's breakfast.
