Politics were not the concern of the Europeans. Politics are internal problems, usually, solved within the Countries. The Silk Road, though, was taken by middle eastern people. Those have always had conflicts with peoples from different belief systems. The Europeans needed a trade route, so it was an economical concern, but the religious tension was also a problem.
