"Your Vote Is Useless." You read an editorial with this title in your local paper that says political and civic participation ar

e pointless and serve no valuable purpose in American society. In a well-written paragraph, defend or argue against that perspective. Include at least two examples of how a person can participate in a democratic society.

I won't write a developed paragraph about this subject, though I will argue that American democracy is based upon it's people. The United States is a democratic republic, therefore people vote on representatives that make up the Senate. Depending upon population, each state will have one or more representatives that will voice ideas and vote upon decisions. Therefore you're vote has a huge impact upon American society.

I will argue that the view expressed in this editorial is a false one. Civic participation is extremely important both for our institutions and for our citizens. People often think that voting is pointless because each vote counts so little. However, it is a mistake to underestimate its importance. Many elections have been won with a very small advantage. Moreover, if everyone believed this, then elections would not work.

More importantly, there are many ways in which citizens can participate in the political life of their country that do not involve voting. Citizens can try to run for office. They can also get engaged in local issues in which they would have more impact. Social movements and peaceful protests are other ways in which citizens can express their views and ensure that they are being heard.

Determine whether the following characteristics describe conditions in Germany before or after unification.

Answers, with explanations:

written constitution = after unification

  • During revolutions in 1848-1849, the Frankfurt Parliament had produced a constitution for a unified Germany, but that move was rejected at the time by the king of Prussia, to whom the constitution was offered.

300 German states = before unification

  • The German states had a long history of sovereignty in their individual territories.  Unification meant bringing all those states together into one national entity.

trade facilitated in the region = before unification

  • The Zollverein, or customs union, was created between the German states in the 1830s.  This eliminated customs tariffs between states and was a step that began moving in the direction of unification.

risk of French aggression = before unification

  • Germany became a united empire after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Victory over France in that war by the German states operating as a coalition was part of what brought about unification.

boundaries changed by Napoleon = before unification

  • When Napoleon conquered territories throughout Europe in the early 1800s, he rearranged borders to enhance his empire's management of conquered territories. In the German states, this made them work together in ways they had not before, and was a catalyst toward desires for unification.

two-house legislature = after unification

  • There was a legislature in the North German Confederation (1867-1870), which preceded unification.  But that was a single-house (unicameral) parliament, whereas the Reichstag (legislature) of the unified German Empire was bicameral.

What is a “cold warrior?” How were both John F Kennedy and Richard Nixon cold warriors?
Anna35 [415]
A Cold Warrior is a person who was actively involved in the conflicts between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War era.

Kennedy would be considered a cold warrior due to his interactions with the Soviet Union. One of the most famous examples is the Cuban Missile Crisis. This conflict that took place in October 1962 was based around the Soviet Union placing missives in Cuba. This was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. However the US and Soviet Union came to a deal.

Nixon would be considered a cold warrior as well because of his role in combating domestic communism during the 1950’s. He heavily influenced the House Un American Activities Committee that questioned American citizens and their ties to the Soviet Union/communism.
