Slate, phyllite. schist and gneiss are foliated metamorphic rocks.

Slate: It is a low grade metamorphic rock that is hard, brittle and fine- grained. It has well developed cleavage called as slaty cleavage. It is composed of clay minerals or mica. The color of slate varies from light to dark grey but also found in black, green, red, purple and brown colors. It is smooth to touch.

Phyllite: It is fine grained foliated metamorphic rock. It is granulated between slate and schist i.e the size of grains are larger than slate and smaller than schist. It is rich in mica. here the platy minerals are in parallel alignment. It is similar to slate rock.

Schist: It is a hard metamorphic rock that is coarse grained with mica crystals. It is made up of plate shaped grains that can be easily seen by naked eyes which means that platy minerals are predominant in schist. It varies in color but generally shiny. It is smooth to touch.

Gneiss: It is also a hard metamorphic rock that is medium to coarse grained. The grains can be seen by naked eyes. Irregular bands of dark ferromagnesian minerals are present with poor cleavage. It is light colored rock and rough to touch. It is formed by the metamorphosis of granite rock.

<span>Slate is a fine-grained, foliated rock composed mainly of clay minerals or micas. Phyllite is created from slate that is further processed so that the texture is similar to very fine grained smoother white mica. It is composed of quartz, sericite mica, and chlorite. Schist is a medium grade rock with medium to large, flat, sheet-like grains complete with quartz and feldspar. Gneiss is a high grade rock. It is created from of granite, or sedimentary rock. Gneiss is known for its alternating layers composed of different minerals.</span>

Which characteristic of the genetic code lowers the likelihood of mutation?
Rudik [331]
Degeneracy

Degeneracy simply means that most of the amino acids produced during protein synthesis from DNA is coded by more than one codon. A codon is a sequence of 3 <span>nucleotides that codes for a specific amino acid.

Because more than 1 codon can produce the same amino acid, the chances of having the synthesis of proteins affected by mutations (i.e. point mutations) is decreased. For example, if the codon with the nucleotide series GAA, which codes for the amino acid glutamate, becomes the codon GAG, the codon will still produce glutamate because the code is degenerate. </span>

ludmilkaskok [199]

Answer:

Growth media are used to grow microorganisms in a lab setting. Some media are liquids; others are more solid or gel-like. A growth medium provides nutrients, including water, various salts, a source of carbon (like glucose), and a source of nitrogen and amino acids (like yeast extract) so microorganisms can grow and reproduce. Ingredients in a growth medium can be modified to grow unique types of microorganisms. For example; <u>  </u><u>Nutrient agar  </u> is a general-purpose, non-selective growth media, <u>   Chocolate agar  </u> is a non selective, enriched growth medium with red blood cells that have been lysed by heat, Columbia Nalidixic Acid (CNA) and <u>  Mannitol Salt agar  </u> are selective agar for Gram positive organisms and <u>  </u><u>MacConkey    </u>agar is a selective agar for Gram negative organisms, Mannitol salt agar MSA is a commonly used selective and differential growth medium that encourages the growth of bacteria that ferments mannitol, <u>  </u><u>Nutrient broth  </u> is an example of a liquid that supports growth of a variety of organisms.

Explanation:

Growth media are classified based on their composition as:

1. General Purpose Media: These type of media support the growth of non-fastidious organisms, that do not require special nutrients for growth, and they also serve as a base for certain modified media. An example is the nutrient agar

2. enriched media: these media, like the name implies, is one that has been modified by the addition of special growth factors and nutrients called enrichment. An example is chocolate agar where lysed blood is added to nutrient base agar, when the blood cells are lysed slowly at 80°C, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (factor V or NAD) and hemin (factor X), are released into the medium, and these support growth of certain fastidious organisms like <em>Haemophilus influenza </em>bacteria.

3. Selective media: These kinds of media contain substances that support the growth of certain organisms while in turn preventing the growth of others due to the presence of certain inhibitory factors. Examples are: Mannitol Salt Agar, which supports growth of Gram-positive organisms and MacConkey agar, which supports the growth of Gram-positive organisms

4. Non Selective media: These type of media have no biases against the growth of certain organisms, that is, they do not contain certain inhibitory factors that impede the growth of certain organisms.

5. Differential media: These media contain chromogenic agents that change colour and helps to differentiate one organism from the other, making for ease of identification especially for organisms with similar properties.

Finally, a broth is a growth medium that fo not contain agar, hence, it is liquid and not solid.

What type of receptors embedded in the urinary bladder wall initiate the micturition reflex?
sasho [114]
Answer is stretch receptors.

Stretch receptors respond to the distention of muscle wall of the bladder and are neurologically linked to the medulla. Stretch receptors in the bladder signal the parasympathetic nervous system to stimulate muscarine receptors, present in the detrusor muscle, to make him contract. This leads to the expulsion of urine.
