In the presidential election of 1896, Republican William McKinley defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan in a campaign considered by historians to be one of the most dramatic and complex in American history.

McKinley forged a coalition in which entrepreneurs, professionals, skilled workers and prosperous farmers were represented to a large extent; McKinley was the strongest in the Northwest, Upper Midwest and on the Pacific Coast. Bryan was the Democratic and Popular Party candidate. He was the strongest in the South, in the rural Midwest, and in the Rocky Mountain states.

Although Bryan lost the election, populist ideals dominated the Democratic Party until the mid-twentieth century, and would play a crucial role in the economic and liberal programs of Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson.
