The tension in a sentence or in literature plays an important role to evoke emotions in the reader. To make the reader sense the story it is important to create tension. In addition, it enables the reader to connect with the character and keep the reader engaged till the end of the book.

Therefore, from the following sentences, a sentence which is the best example of tension is B) a mother is awoken in the night by a clanging doorbell and flashing blue lights

As in the following the tension is created as the doorbell noises, not knowing who might be there in the night and also due to the blue lights flashing which adds suspense and tension to what it might be from.
