Mostly plants with pith in the centre have dicots stems mostly they are usually darker inner wood of a large diameter trunk is termed the heartwood and is the result of tylosis. The outer, living wood is termed the sapwood. New pith growth is white or pale in color, as the tissue ages it commonly darkens to a deeper brown color. In trees pith is usually present in young growth.
