The Shakers were a religious sect who eschewed earthly desire and pleasure in order to better serve God. Their main influence in music was the religious music of the Christian faith, e.g. hymn and gospel. Beethoven produced most of his great works in the German town of Vienna. He outlived Mozart, which is no small task in a world with no antibiotics, but he also produced more music. He dedicated Eroica to Napoleon but then withdraw the dedication at the pressure of his patron.
