Provided that no one can receive more than one prize, there are 50*49*48= 117600 ways to distribute the prizes. The first prize can be given to any of the 50 people, the second to any of the remaining 49, and the third to the remaining of the 48, multiplying these possibilities together leads to the answer.

Ken bought 3 3/4 pounds of apples at the farmers' market. Abby bought 2 1/8 pounds of apples. How many pounds of apples did Ken
STatiana [176]
First you convert the fractions into improper fractions to make adding simpler by multiplying the denominator by the whole number and then adding that to the numerator.
3 3/4 = 15/4 and 2 1/8 = 17/8

Next, you change 15/4 into 30/8 so that you could add the fractions together. (The denominators have to be the same)

Then you just add the numerators: 30/8 + 17/8 = 47/8 = 5 7/8

Answer: 5 7/8 pounds in total

lions [1.4K]
There are 5 x 10 = 50 different outcomes.

Of them only 3x10, 4x10, 4x9, 4x8, 5x10, 5x9, 5x8, 5x7 and 5x6 are greater or equal than 30. Those are 9 possibilities.

Then 50 - 9 = 41 are the possibilities that the product of the two numbers is less than 30.

The probalility, then, is 41/50 = 0.82
