250 words? I guess I can try my best, not sure if I can make it with in 300 though. O'well
I would normally edit my answers to make it clearer and more readable like so, but that is bad for copying and pasting. Sorry for the inconvenience
This story was written by Dante Alighieri between 1308 to 1321, Dante wrote this poem from during his exile from Florence. It was called the Divine Comedy. Dante makes use of symbols, images, or figures that stand for something else.
One thing that makes Dante's epic particularly rich is that his symbols refer to more than one thing. By saying things in a unusual way, or of that which is not of the norm and tying his poem to the bible with sentences like "The days of our years are threescore years and ten" (Psalm chapter 90, verse 10 of the Old KJV Bible) which is how men back then would refer to ages of people.
The poem is written in the first person as Dante describes his fictional journey and thus with this particular allusion, Dante starts the story when he was thirty-five years of age. Another hidden meaning behind this is, which based on his age, it connects this poem to a certain year known to them as a Jubilee Yeah: thought to be a particularly holy year in that day and age.
Other biblical references include "the wolf may also represent sins seen in Hell, immoderate pursuit of pleasure, or the cardinal sin of avarice" referring to how evil men are pictured sometimes in the Bible.
Dante also goes on to references 2 of the places people go after they die, and also a third (because he is a catholic and only catholics "believe" in it) called Purgatory. The first 2 called heaven and hell are referenced many times in the bible and the same is true in the Divine Comedy, and while purgatory is not mentioned at all in the Bible it helps to tie the story to the Catholic church.
This makes it less likely that he will be targeted and get in trouble while being able to express his hidden thoughts better.
