In this soliloquy, Gloucester essentially introduces himself to the audience. He gives insight into what happened before the plot of the play and how the war-times have turned to happiness. We get to see though, his true personality when he talks about how much he hates the happy mood surrounding him. He is deformed, we get to hear about his physicality in this soliloquy too, and hates everyone around him. He also sets up his motivation for the treachery he is about to cause and a bit of preview for the plot of the rest of the play.
