<span>The author builds events slowly to create tension.

The author shows that it is a serious topic because black balls symbolize death and foreboding, that those who draw them will be sacrificed. The tension is built as the process is explained, then the young women start to draw, then the young men draw the balls. Finally, Theseus comes forward to sacrifice himself. </span>
