The liberal Democratic Party of Japan has been the predominant political force in Japan since its foundation in 1955. It has been in power for almost all this time except for 2 brief periods in the 90s and late 00s. Its political views are conservative. They support the neoliberal system of Laissez Faire economics and the free market.

During the early years of the Cold War, between 1950 and 1970, the party held strong oppositions to leftist political movements who supported Communist views. These were normally formed by labor unions who consistently lobby for better working conditions, which include a rise in wages.
