The values and culture of China and America are an important consideration in this story. Jing-mei is the daughter of a Chinese woman. However, she is more Americanized. Her mother wants Jing-mei to try her best to be the best she can be. However, Jing-mei believes this to be a cultural difference, as Chinese mothers tend to give too much importance to the accomplishments of their children. Moreover, the mother and the daughter have different opinions in terms of what success is. The mother encourages Jing-mei to try playing the piano, while the daughter wants to become famous by singing and dancing.
