Answer:

The sentence from the passage that best supports the author's viewpoint that the situation is hopeless is d): “<em>The death rattle of an entire convoy with the end approaching.”</em>

Explanation:

In these lines, the author describes the scene with the knowledge of being close to death. In this excerpt, he says: "<em>with the end approaching</em>", <u>he knows the end is coming and he seems to have no doubt about it, he is hopeless.</u> It doesn't seem to be a possible way out of the death, that's why I chose the last option, because the author describes the end as a fact and not as a possible outcome of events.

lianna [129]

Answer:

One of the central theme is "Reputation".

Explanation:

The Crucible  by Arthur Miller is story about John Proctor who confesses to all his crimes in the court. He accepts his affair with Abigail and even for doing witchcraft. But, at the end he says "I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”. By this he meant that a person takes his whole life to build a reputation in the society. So, he did not want to tarnish his good name and reputation by signing the confession. He said that he has confessed all but will not sign the document.

Several characters including Abigial, Parris, Rebecca protect their reputations in the story.

DedPeter [7]

Answer:

A. The woman who cleans the house.

Explanation:

In Metamorphosis, a short story written by Franz Kafka, the main character, Gregor, finds himself at the beginning of the story turned into a sort of bug, which alienates him from his family and from his daily routine, not to mention his own consciousness. 1) Each state should enact a law that makes wearing seat belts mandatory for all passengers and drivers in cars and trucks. (2)
tekilochka [14]

Answer:

(4) Some people believe that the government does not have the right to force people to be safe, and that these laws are unfair.

Explanation:

Counter argument is a statement which opposes writer's main argument for any purpose. However when a writer opposes one's own argument, it is usually for the purpose of including all point of views and aspects of the problem. In most of such cases the author negates (presents counter of counter argument) to finally establish one's original argument.

In this passage, the author is trying to establish the importance of making seat belts mandatory by law in each state of the United States. However in line 4, he presents some other people's point of view on this issue. And in line 5, restates his/her original argument. The overall effect, the author is trying to bring about in the audience by including the counter argument is that, he/she has already considered the counter argument as well.
