  • The answer is: The evidence details how Gandhi saw a man who had been beaten and knew that the man could not leave.
  • Gandhi was well aware of the indentured servants' brutal treatment and he compares it with his previous situation in India, where he couldn't leave his society since, if he crossed the blackwater, he would lose caste.
  • Later, Gandhi encounters a man in terrible conditions, as a result of his work. Gandhi knew that something similar happened to the indentured labourer: they could not leave their jobs because they were "property of his master" and, if they ever tried so, they would be prosecuted and jailed.

The answer is C.  When Mahatma Gandhi saw the poor man beaten, he felt sorry for him, for although he was treated very badly by his boss, he still couldn't just leave or look for justice, because if he tried he would be in trouble with the law also.<em> His condition was hopeless and he was helpless,</em> and this led Gandhi to perceive the trap this kind of labor really was.

Which elements keep you most interested in a fictional book? Check any that apply.
Kazeer [188]
Well, it depends on the genre of that non-fictional book. For instance, a mystery book would make the audience interested if there was an unsolved mystery included, but an adventure book, for instance, might hook the reader if it was actually based on historical events and something like the book described had actually happened. Therefore, for a fictional book, I would say all of these interest me depending on the type of book.

What is the function of the underlined infinitive?
marissa [1.9K]

Answer:

B. Direct Object

Explanation:

A direct object receives the action of a transitive verb. Thus, the infinitive verb <em>to swing</em> is undergoes the action of the verb <em>began</em>.

The rest of the options are incorrect. In the sentence given, <em>to swing</em> does not function as a main verb. Besides, a predicate noun or nominative follows the verb <em>to be</em> and gives information about the subject. Finally, the infinitive verb does not follow a preposition.

erik [133]

Answer:

a. went

b. for

c. was

d. going

e. when

f. to

g. faced

h. of

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi <u>went </u>to England <u>for</u> higher studies at the age of 19. His mother <u>was</u> apprehensive about young men <u>going</u> astray in western society. But her fears were allayed <u>when</u> Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi swore not <u>to</u> touch meat, wine and women. He <u>faced</u> a lot <u>of</u> difficulties due to his vegetarianism.

Explanation:

In this excerpt, we should use the Past Simple, as the whole story refers to the past. Therefore, we should use verbs like <em>went, was, faced</em>, etc...

The construction go for something means <em>try to achieve a goal</em>, in this case, he tried to finish his higher studies.

e.g. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi <u>went </u>to England <u>for</u> higher studies at the age of 19.

The construction <em>to be afraid/worried/apprehensive about + V+ -ing</em><em> </em>contains the verb with <em>-ing</em> at the end, as a part of this construction, so, in this case, we should change the verb form from <em>go </em>to <em>going</em>.

e.g. . His mother <u>was apprehensive about</u> young men <u>going</u> astray in western society.

But her fears were allayed <u>when</u> Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi swore not <u>to</u> touch meat, wine and women.

In this sentence, we should use when instead of that, because <em>when </em>acts as a conjunction meaning <em>at the time that</em>.

We use the construction not to when we want to emphasize the absence of some action; in this case, that he will not touch meat, wine and women.

The construction a lot of refers to a large number or amount of things (in this case difficulties).

He faced <u>a lot of</u> difficulties due to his vegetarianism.
