Question: Hemingway is known for his spare writing style.<em> </em>What does his use of repetition most reveal about Jig?

Options:

  • It highlights the anger Jig feels toward the American.
  • It implies Jig will remain when the American boards the train.
  • It shows Jig’s strong desire to end the topic of conversation.
  • It suggests Jig’s wish to end the argument they are having.

Answer: The correct answer is: <u>It shows Jig's strong desire to end the topic of conversation.</u>

Explanation: Ernest Hemingway wrote the short story ''Hills Like White Elephants”. It opens with an American man and his girlfriend. They are sitting at a table outside a train station in Spain, waiting for a train to Madrid. The American man mentions that he wants his girlfriend “Jig,” to have an operation. It is never specified what kind of operation but the American mentions that things will be fine afterward and that it will fix their problems. He emphasizes how much he cares for Jig; however, she mentions that she doesn't care about what happens to herself. They argue for a while until the girl gets tired and asks the American the following: “Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?'' Hemingway uses repetition to reveal Jig's strong desire to end the topic about the operation and her decision of whether or not to go forward with it.

I would assume it shows Jig’s strong desire to end the conversation, since he is pleading with the person to stop it.

How does Josephine Preston Peabody’s use of imagery and figurative language enhance the story? Cite specific examples of imagery
lord [1]

Answer:

Imagery and figurative language are used in the short story as a way to understand some thoughts transmitted in sentences, as well as to intensify the reader's perception of these meanings.

Explanation:

Imagery is used in the text to intensify one of the reader's senses and make him better understand what is being described in the text. In this way, imagery has the ability, literally, to provoke a strong sensation in the reader and bring him closer to what he is reading. In the text we can see this in the lines:

<em>"At length, watching the sea-gulls in the air—the only creatures that were sure of liberty—he thought of a plan for himself and his young son Icarus, who was captive with him."</em>

Figurative language aims to express an idea based on the use of words that are not objectively related to that idea, but establishes a subjunctive relationship that gives a lot of meaning to the text, in addition to exercising the reader's reasoning and understanding of the constructions. We can see a figurative language in the lines:

<em>"He fell like a leaf tossed down the wind, down, down, with one cry that overtook Daedalus far away. "</em>

Match the fallacy type to the statement that illustrates it.
valkas [14]

The fallacy of <em>logos</em> is "the last time it rained, our local sports team won. It is raining today, so they will win tonight". It's logos because in order to persuade a target audience it uses a statement empowered by logic. The logical reasoning suggests that if the last time the match was played was raining and they won, now that it's raining again, the will win again. The logical thought is that <em>when it rains, the local team wins.</em>

The fallacy of <em>pathos</em> is "If we don't pass this environmental protection bill now, the world will probably end soon". It's pathos because this fallacy tries to persuade by provoking certain emotions or feelings to readers. In this way, the statement is more appalling to the reader and it feels more emotionally attached to it. By talking about the end of the world, the writer is<em> </em><em>trying to evoke feelings of awareness, sorrow and frightening.</em> So by provoking these feelings, <em>readers may become more aware and concerned</em> about the environmental changes that the human kind needs to make now in order to prevent the complete destruction of our world.

The fallacy of <em>ethos</em> is "My favorite teacher said that we should vote for Mr.Martinez, so I believe he is the best". It's ethos because the writer is convincing people by the credibility or authority of the speaker. In this case, the teacher represents a credible and respectful figure. So the reader <em>decides to vote for whom the teacher said just because THE teacher said that.</em>
