What three roles does the dialogue play in this passage? "Lloyd, I’m warning you. If you read a single word from my diary, I wil

l tell the whole school about your misadventure in the pool last summer," Dana bellowed. She tried unsuccessfully to wrestle out the journal from her brother's strong grip. "No you won't,” said Lloyd. “I already gave you half of my allowance to forget that. You promised to never bring it up." "Ha! You really thought fifty bucks would buy my silence. Give me back my diary or else." Dana’s face was turning as red as the color of her curly hair. "Now I’m gonna definitely read this diary,” said her brother. “That way, we’ll be even." Lloyd tried to hold the journal in one hand, while his other hand struggled to keep Dana away. His height gave him an advantage, but Dana was quite pretty strong for her size. "Knock it off, both of you," roared their older sister, Amy, from the hallway. "If you don't, I’ll share the video of you two dancing at Uncle Gary's wedding last year." Dana and Lloyd froze with looks of horror. They knew their sister was perfectly capable of carrying out her threat. They decided not to risk it. It resolves a conflict. It develops the theme of friendship. It advances the plot to the story’s rising action. It develops the siblings' personalities. It introduces a conflict.

The three roles that the dialogue play on the passage are:

1. It resolves a conflict. The diary conflict between Dana and Lloyd is resolved by the introduction of their sister and the  threat to release the video of the dance.

2. It develops the sibling's personalities. Personalities are clearly marked, Lloyd enjoys to tease Dana, while Dana gets easily annoyed. Amy on the other hand is the oldest sister and she tends to resolve the conflicts between the youngest siblings.

3. It introduces a conflict. While the journal conflict is resolved a new conflict emerges, Amy now has a threat over Lloyd and Dana and if they do not behave as she pleases then they will both be embarrassed.

What conclusion can you draw from the fact that Spanish and Portuguese are the most commonly spoken languages in Latin America?
Sergio [31]

The correct answer is  C) Spain and Portugal colonized Latin American nations during the 15th and 16th centuries.

At the arrival of the Iberian conqueror, Latin America was not empty. In 1500 the indigenous population was more than 100 million (by 1810 this had diminished to 10 million "by means of civilization") and its level of development was greatly varied: some were living as tribal people; others, as the “Quechuas”, the “Aymaras”, the “Mayas” or the “Aztecas” had constituted high civilizations. During the colonial period, the domination was centered around the Spanish or Portuguese metropolis, coexisting with the local, almost absolute power, of the agent or the landowner. The encounters of the Spanish and Portuguese with the indigenous peoples of Central and South America in the early sixteenth century were to establish a pattern of conquest and subjugation which would persist throughout the colonial period.
