The four words in the excerpt that suggest this sense of suffocation are:

B- confinement. This word means to be forced to be indoors. "...after the long day of confinement in the house ..."

D. strained: To make an effort to do something using all your mental and physical strenght. "...the children strained to get out." If they made such an effort ,it was because it was terribly hot inside the house.

E. stifled: To feel unable to breathe because it is too hot and there is no fresh air."....in a way that stifled the children.."

F. Choke: To be unable to breath because you cannot get enough air or because something has blocked the passage of air to your lungs. "if they didn’t burst out into the light and see the sun and feel the air, they would choke."

Lynna [10]
As we rode in the bus in the weird phosphorescent void of the Lincoln Tunnel we leaned on each other with fingers waving and yelled and talked excitedly, and I was beginning to get the bug like Dean. He was simply a youth tremendously excited with life, and though he was a con-man, he was only conning because he wanted so much to live and to get involved with people who would otherwise pay no attention to him. What does this excerpt demonstrate about the culture of the beat generation? I would say the answer is"Beat artists most desired direct and varied life experiences" based on the behaviour of the beat artist mentioned above.

Compare and contrast letter to a young refugee from another and farewell to manzanar
abruzzese [7]

Letter to a Young Refugee from another and Farewell to Manzanar are both stories about struggles of families inside a refugee camp for the former and internment camp for the latter. In the “Letter to a Young refugee” which took place in Guam after the Vietnam war, Lam addresses another refugee he saw in the news to relate his previous experience. The theme is more like, “I know what you are going through.”

In “Farewell to Manzanar”, the main character went back to the old camp in Manzanar much later in her life to reflect on what used to be her life there as a displaced Japanese in America.
