Raya is a gardening enthusiast who is looking to buy a new house. She wonders whether her house plants will grow well if she buy

s an apartment on a higher floor. She remembers that her friend Jenn also has a small garden on her balcony, and her plants seem healthy. Raya conducts an experiment to study the effect of altitude on the growth of plants. She gathers plant samples and places them on five different floors of a 20-story building. Identify the basic components of Raya’s experiment, including the confounding variable.

Answer:

1. Independent variable- the altitude

2. Dependent variable- the growth of plants

3. Constant variable- the amount of water and nutrients

4. Confounding variable: the storeys of the building.

Explanation:

The basic components of a scientific experiment are the types of variables included in the experiment which are dependent (to be studied), independent (can be changed)  and the constant variables (remain same).

The experiment is also influenced by another variable called confounding variable which directly influence these basic variables and can cause or produce the useless results in an experiment.

In the given question,

1. Independent variable- the altitude

2. Dependent variable- the growth of plants

3. Constant variable- the amount of water and nutrients

4. Confounding variable: the storeys of the building.

The basic components (depedent and indepedent variables) are the plants and altitude while the confounding variable is the 20 story building. Confounding variables affect the experiement variable and are mainly outside of the researcher’s control in the experiment.  Ray cannot change the building but this variable can affect the depedent and indepedent variables and cause distorted or spurious results.

A mutation in a gene in the fruit fly Drosophila was found to affect eye color. The protein affected was found to be completely
lilavasa [31]

Answer:

The correct option is D. A reasonable explanation for the change in levels of protein is that the mutation occurs in the promoter of the gene, within several hundred base pairs of the start of transcription.

Explanation:

In genetics, a promoter can be described as a region where the RNA polymerase binds initially and starts transcription. The promoter is usually present near to the gene that has to be transcribed. The rate of transcription is controlled by the promoter region too. Hence, the correct option is D. The promoter region for the eye colour was changed due to mutation.

Other options are false because a change in a codon or base pair would have changed proteins being formed and would not have slowed the process.

Why anatomical and molecular features often fit a similar nested pattern.in addition descibe a orocess that can cause this not t
Ivenika [448]
Anatomical and molecular features often fit a similar pattern due to Homology. Homology is the existence of shared ancestry between two structures or genes in a different species.

A process that can cause this not to be the case is Convergent Evolution.
Convergent Evolution occurs when two unrelated species independently evolve similar traits to cope with evolutionary changes.

What is the function of antithrombin found in the blood and on the cells lining blood vessels?
marshall27 [118]
Antithrombin is a protein molecule that inactivates several enzymes of coagulation system. It is a glycoprotein produced by the liver consisting of 432 amino acids and three disulfide bonds. The antithrombin found in the blood and the cell lining blood vessels function to prevent unwanted formation of clot.

Shanghai and Buenos Aires are located thousands of miles apart and in different hemispheres, yet their climates are similar. Wha
liubo4ka [24]
That's because they are in the same climate zone. The earth's climate zones change going from the north pole to the equator, and then from the equator to Antarctica, like a mirror image. The two are found in the same zones on the opposite hemispheres.
