Read the adapted excerpt from "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. Which two lines reflect the theme that men must never go agains

t fate? He took something out of his pocket and proffered it. Mrs. White drew back with a grimace, but her son, taking it, examined it curiously. "And what is there special about it?" inquired Mr. White as he took it from his son, and having examined it, placed it upon the table. "It had something put on it by an old Fakir," said the Sargeant-Major, "a very respected man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it." "And did you really have the three wishes granted?" asked Mrs. White. "I did," said the seargent-major, and his glass tapped against his strong teeth. "And has anybody else wished?" persisted the old lady. "The first man had his three wishes. Yes," was the reply, "I don't know what the first two were, but the third was for demise. That's how I got the paw." His tones were so grave that a hush fell upon the group.

Answer:

1. <u>He wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow.</u> <em>( This is showing old Fakir's opinion, which parallels with the theme )</em>

2. <u>"I don't know what the first two were, but the third was for demise."</u><u> </u><em>( This proves that old Fakir was right, those who interfered with fate did it with great peril to themselves. The man before the Sargeant-Major wished for death using his last wish. )</em>

I just took the quiz and these were right... Hope this helps someone else though! (:

Study the editorial cartoon by Signe Wilkinson. A man sits, sweating on a city sidewalk. A passerby also looks hot and sweaty, a
xxTIMURxx [149]

Answer:

The question is incomplete. The editorial cartoon image is lacking. Here is the image the question's referring to.

The details that best support the purpose of this editorial cartoon are:

  • the "will work for air conditioning" sign
  • the rat sweating on the sidewalk
  • the comfortable man in the air-conditioned car

Explanation:

There are a number of details to consider in the editorial cartoon to understand its message. It includes the man holding the sign, the rat, and the man riding in an air-conditioned car.

But, if you look closely, Signe Wilkinson signed this on 7-6-2010 for the Philadelphia Daily News. It is better to know this date and place. But what is its importance? <em><u>During this time, the Philadelphia set a new record regarding heatwave. The temperature reached 103 degrees breaking the old record of 98 degrees in 1994. </u></em>

Climate change and global warming clearly affect people in the middle class or the working class who cannot afford to buy an air-conditioned car. And they are willing to work on breathing cold air. It also displays that not only humans are affected by a heatwave, but also animals, thus, the sweating rat.

<em><u>During this time, in 2010, people have died because of the heatwave. And the air conditioning business was booming because of in-demand repairs. </u></em>

The Frost performs its secret ministry, Unhelped by any wind. The owlet’s cry Came loud – and hark, again ! loud as before. The
galben [10]

A. The ‘secret ministry’ of the frost is that:

(d) it has a secret deal with nature.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge uses the word "ministry", which conveys something is working on behalf of others. It may have a religious  connotation as well, as minister can also mean pastor. So the author wants to express nature as something that is alive, which is why it can have a deal with the frost. And it is secret because it falls at midnight, when everyone is asleep.

B. There is silence all around. This is seen in the phrase:

(b) all at rest.

The author says everyone else is sleeping, so aside from the owl breaking the silence twice, there is no other sound.

C. Who is sleeping in the cradle?

(c) the poet's son.

His son Hartley is the one sleeping, which is clear in the sentence "<em>my </em>cradled infant".

D. What disturbs the calm?

(c) the calmness.

Coleridge expresses that the calm is so deep that it is disturbing in itself in the verse:

"<em>‘It’s calm indeed ! so calm, that it disturbs </em>

<em>And vexes meditation with its strange </em>

<em>And extreme silence.</em>"

E. The word ‘meditation’ means:

(b) deep thoughts.

The author is referring to his tendency to get lost in deep, philosophical thoughts, which he is able to do when he is by himself at night and everything is quiet.
