it has a strong impact on personal growth throughout life

Addams felt that childhood was important because it has a strong impact on personal growth throughout life. In the passage it says that "our genuine impulses may be connected with our childish experiences". Then she goes on to say that it eventually settles "into definite lines of future development." For this reason she starts her book with "some impression of my childhood." Addams is saying that she begins her book with these memories from her childhood because her childhood is what shaped her and impacted the way she grew throughout her life so far.
