Schlesinger is talking about the "mass organizations" of the communist parties. Those were actually fronts for the communist parties that would, many times, attract members that were not aware of the political agenda or political mindset of the leaders.

This is a strategy commonly used by communist parties around the world and it's very prominent in South America, specially.

Schlesinger's concern is about the influence that the Communist Party had over those groups and how its power was increasing through groups that "disguised" as something else but were actually under control of the Communist Party and the party could eventually use the individuals that belonged to those groups to achieve their goals and many times, the individuals used wouldn't even be aware of it.

There are six provinces in Cuba, each, with the exception of Matanzas, extending the whole width of the island, and having about an equal sea front on the north and south borders. Matanzas touches the Caribbean Sea only at its south-west corner, being separated from it elsewhere by a narrow peninsula of Santa Clara Province. The provinces are named, beginning at the west, Pinar del Rio, Havana, Matanzas, Santa Clara, Puerto Principe and Santiago de Cuba.

Explain how a map of the missions can be an example of the human-environment interaction.
Rom4ik [11]
Missions tended to be located near running rivers or larger streams. They also tended to choose areas with larger flat areas that would be good for farming. Farming was important as this would be one the main ways that the missionaries fed themselves and what they taught willing Native American converts. Missions appear during the time when we had to adapt and adjust to the environment around them. They didn't have the ability to adjust the environment to their needs.
