Human rights versus property rights. That argument goes on today as, for example, we debate how closely to regulate coal mining.

Is it best to let owners set rules, which is likely to give all of us cheaper coal, or to have the government set standards, which is more likely to protect workers and the environment? In France, one side argued that slaves must be freed. The other said that to change anything in the sugar islands would invite slave revolts, help France's rivals, and thus hurt the nation. In the new United States, the Revolution gave white men with property a sense of freedom, while Africans were still enslaved. In England, abolitionists spoke up for Africans, but kings and lords still ruled. In France, revolutionaries were turning against their own nobles but remained uncertain about what this meant for enslaved Africans on their sugar islands. The Age of Revolutions was pressing ideas of freedom against the rights of property, and no one was sure where these great clashes would lead. In revolutionary France, the defenders of slaves began to win the argument against the advocates of property rights. By fall of 1791, the French passed a law making free blacks and people of mixed background on the sugar islands legally equal to all other Frenchmen. – Sugar Changed the World, Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos Which line from the passage best provides evidence that the sugar trade led to the end of slavery? “In France, one side argued that slaves must be freed.” “To change anything in the sugar islands would invite slave revolts, help France's rivals, and thus hurt the nation.” “No one was sure where these great clashes would lead.” “In revolutionary France, the defenders of slaves began to win the argument against the advocates of property rights.”

Answer: The answer is indeed letter D) “In revolutionary France, the defenders of slaves began to win the argument against the advocates of property rights.”

Explanation:

That line introduces the idea that sugar is related to the freeing of slaves. The lines that follow state that black and mixed people from the French sugar islands were made legally equal to any other person from France. In other parts of the world, the ideas of freedom were still clashing with ideas of property. The same men who fought for their own freedom hesitated when it came to freeing the slaves that worked for them, since they believed they belonged to them. According to this excerpt, we can still see such a clash in current days when governments don't seem to want to regulate certain industries and protect their employees for the fear of affecting prices and the market.

Describe Wiesel's opinion of his fellow Sighet citizens. Find and write a line from the text the supports your statement.
Naddika [18.5K]
The people of Sighet, like many Jewish people in Europe at the time, are naive and unable to believe the atrocities being committed by the Nazis.

When Moshe returns to Sighet and tells everyone about what he experienced, they are unable to believe him. Instead of believing him, the people of Sighet say he is crazy. If they were to believe him, they would have to admit the fact they were in danger as well. They do not believe until it is far too late to leave.

Northfield is a model city in Westport County. Crime rates have dropped 28% in the last five years, and new business development
Over [174]
The correct answer would be D. Answer C neglects any opposing viewpoints, and is more of a closing sentence for the opposing argument generated in Answer D. Although the answers A and B throw Proposition S into a negative light, they do not themselves generate an opposing argument. Rather, they are just quick statements supporting the argument presented in answer D. D most sufficiently represents an opposing viewpoint as it acknowledges the other side of the argument, presents a statement that opposes this acknowledged argument, and follows with multiple supporting statements to strengthen the reasoning for opposing Proposition S. The passage continues to support this statement with: These city governments would be required to pay for public services in areas where local politicians have failed to find a way to fund their own projects. Approximately $12.3 million dollars of tax revenue would be redirected toward county projects. Many programs at our new community center will have to be cut. (Answer A) *This would affect more than 40,000 citizens of Northfield. The construction of Northfield Park would probably have to be put on hold. (Answer B) The passage closes with. What is good for Northfield is good for all of Westport County. (Answer C) As these are just supporting statements for the argument presented in Answer D, or closing the letter, they cannot be the main opposing viewpoint being addressed. Therefore, they would be incorrect.
