Answer:

Part A

Justin initially finds Taya annoying, but he grows to enjoy her company.

Part B

"Justin looked at Taya, looked at the cards, and looked at the stickers covering his arms. 'That would be fun, Mom, but it's not necessary.'"

Explanation:

In the beginning, Justin was more reluctant to accompany his mother for the Mitzvah Day. He would rather be with his friends <em>"playing hockey in the parking lot"</em> of the local church. Added to that, he was asked to help the small kids making cards.

When Taya approached him and asked to man the station, he was looking for excuses to stay away from the task. But with time, he began to love the work and was full of "stickers' by the end of the day. His reaction in declining the offer of going to the pizza place shows his changed attitude about the day.

Thus, we can assume that Justin's relationship with Taya may be annoying at the start but at the end of the day, he grows to enjoy her company and the tasks that he was assigned to do. This can be seen through his denial to go to his favorite pizza place as his mother's way of thanking him. His attitude had changed by the end of the event and was shown more accepting of everything.

Which statement best states the claim, or main point, that Bacon builds upon in this passage?
Montano1993 [528]

Part A was which statement best states the claim, or main point, that Bacon builds upon in this passage?

A. Holding high office causes people to do evil.

B. Holding high office is one of the noblest aspirations.

C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

D. Holding high office helps people serve others in many ways.

Answer:

C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

Explanation:

The statement that best states the claim that Bacon made in the passage is the third statement because it shows that holding high office comes at a great cost and that highly placed powerful people are really servants, both to the state, fame, or business which takes away a degree of their freedom.

Therefore, the correct answer is C. Holding high office has costs as great as any of the benefits.

Archy [21]

Tan builds a central idea of her story in the excerpt as:

Tan discusses her mother’s use of English to build the idea that a form of language can be purposeful and meaningful even if it is nonstandard.

Amy Tan's essay “Mother Tongue” is about the difficulties that a child has to face if it grows in a family in which its parents speak 'limited English.' Amy's mother was among such parent who was unable to speak fluent and proper English. It is through the language that the person is judged by others. Amy was brought up by her mother and because of this, her writing style was much influenced by the language spoken at her home. Her mother taught her that a person's perception of the world is influenced by the language spoken at home.
