In "The Notorious Jumping From of Calaveras County" by Mark Twain, the shortcomings that the narrator and Jim Smiley share was they were being greedy. Jim Smiley is the main character and showed his greed for money but got in trouble.

In “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain, the shortcomings that the narrator and Jim Smiley share are that They are greedy. 

Jim Smiley gets deceived by the man who betted against him. Jim betted that his frog Dan’l can outjump any frog in the country. The man filled the frog with quail shots so that he can win the bet. Jim appeared to be lucky before everyone but it was his cunning and clever nature which helped him win the bet.
