The vertical line test is a test to determine if a relation or its graph is a function or not. For a relation or graph to be a function, it can have at most a single y-value for each x-value. Thus, a vertical line drawn at any x-position on the graph of a function will intersect the graph at most once.

<span>To use the vertical line test graphically, take a ruler or other "vertical line" and move it from one end of the x-axis to the other while keeping it parallel to the y-axis. If the graph intersects the ruler or vertical line more than once at any given value of y, the graph is not a function. However, if the graph intersects the vertical line no more than once at any given point, it is a function. </span>

A leaf hangs from a branch 12 feet in the air. It falls to the ground at a rate of 0.25 feet per second. Which graph could repre
kiruha [24]
The <u>correct answer</u> is:

The last graph.

Explanation:

The leaf starts at 12 feet above the ground.  This eliminates the <u>first and third</u> graph, leaving the second and last.

The leaf falls at 0.25 ft/sec.  This means it would take 4 seconds for the leaf to fall 1 foot.

On the <u>second graph</u>, when we go over to 4 seconds and then up, the line is at 10 feet; this means it fell 2 feet in 4 seconds.  This is <u>too fast</u>.

On the <u>last graph</u>, going over to 4 seconds and then up, the line is at 11 feet; this means it fell 1 foot in 4 seconds.  <u>This is correct</u>.
