Chapter 15 of the text shows the scene where Atticus Finch along with Sheriff Tate had been guarding Tom Robinson, a black man accused of ra ping a while girl. Soon after, a group of men along with Mr. Cunningham had assembled to that spot to try to hurt Tom or intimidate Atticus. But when he saw Scout, he didn't know how to handle the situation. Scout attended the same school as his son and they were also friends. So, due to the presence of Scout in the jailhouse, Mr. Cunningham led the men away from the spot, thus saving everyone including Tom.
