Muscle cells have high ATP demands. Which of the following is a scientific claim about how the structure of the mitochondria in

muscle cells should be different than it is in other cells because of the high energy demands of mitochondria?
The inner membrane of the mitochondria in muscle cells should have more folds to increase the surface area, allowing more ATP to be synthesized.

A

The inner membrane of the mitochondria in muscle cells should be more permeable to large enzymes, allowing the same reactions to occur in both compartments of the mitochondria.

B

The outer membrane of the mitochondria in muscle cells should be thicker, allowing more rapid diffusion of molecules into the mitochondria.

C

The outer membrane of the mitochondria of muscle cells should have more folds, increasing the surface area for faster diffusion of molecules from the cytoplasm.

Answer:

Mitochondria - Turning on the Powerhouse

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell. The biochemical processes of the cell are known as cellular respiration. Many of the reactions involved in cellular respiration happen in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the working organelles that keep the cell full of energy.

Mitochondria are small organelles floating free throughout the cell. Some cells have several thousand mitochondria while others have none. Muscle cells need a lot of energy so they have loads of mitochondria. Neurons (cells that transmit nerve impulses) don’t need as many. If a cell feels it is not getting enough energy to survive, more mitochondria can be created. Sometimes a mitochondria can grow larger or combine with other mitochondria. It all depends on the needs of the cell.

Mitochondria Structure

Cross-section of a mitochondrion. Membranes, Matrix.Mitochondria are shaped perfectly to maximize their productivity. They are made of two membranes. The outer membrane covers the organelle and contains it like a skin. The inner membrane folds over many times and creates layered structures called cristae. The fluid contained in the mitochondria is called the matrix.

The folding of the inner membrane increases the surface area inside the organelle. Since many of the chemical reactions happen on the inner membrane, the increased surface area creates more space for reactions to occur. If you have more space to work, you can get more work done. Similar surface area strategies are used by microvilli in your intestines.

What’s in the matrix? It's not like the movies at all. Mitochondria are special because they have their own ribosomes and DNA floating in the matrix. There are also structures called granules which may control concentrations of ions. Cell biologists are still exploring the activity of granules.

Using Oxygen to Release Energy

How does cellular respiration occur in mitochondria? The matrix is filled with water and proteins (enzymes). Those proteins take organic molecules, such as pyruvate and acetyl CoA, and chemically digest them. Proteins embedded in the inner membrane and enzymes involved in the citric acid cycle ultimately release water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules from the breakdown of oxygen (O2) and glucose (C6H12O6). The mitochondria are the only places in the cell where oxygen is reduced and eventually broken down into water.

Mitochondria are also involved in controlling the concentration of calcium (Ca2+) ions within the cell. They work very closely with the endoplasmic reticulum to limit the amount of calcium in the cytosol.

Which Punnet square represents a cross between two parents that are heterozygous for purple flowers
navik [9.2K]

Answer:

Punnett square is a square diagram which is used to predict the genotype of the offspring produced by particular cross.

Let P and p be the alleles of the gene responsible for the flower colors in a plant.

The genotype of both the parents is given as heterozygous that is, Pp.

Two types of gametes would be formed P and p.

The cross is shown in the image below.

The cross would be result in offspring with three types of genotypes PP, Pp and pp in 1:2:1.

How does water's specific heat relate to its usefulness for life give examples?
RideAnS [48]
Water covers around 70% of the Earth's surface and its high specific heat plays a very important role as it is able to absorb a lot of heat without a significant rise in the temperature. When temperatures decrease, the heat which is stored is released, restraining a rapid drop in temperature. The combined effect of these processes is a buffering of temperature on the Earth.

A substance that yields a cation plus the hydroxyl ion in water is a(n)_____.
ivanzaharov [21]
The substance that yields a Cation plus the Hydroxyl ion in water is a Base.
A Cation is a positively charged ion. A Hydroxyl ion is an ion with a negative charge and is made up on one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom. Bases are substances that promote chemical reactions. Dissociation is a process in which ionic compounds split into smaller particles.
In this case, the base acts by dissociation to yield a Cation plus a Hydroxyl ion in water.
