The Land Ordinance’s system of dividing and selling public lands promoted settlement of the West and provided income for the government.

The Northwest Ordinance provided for government in the territories and established a system for adding new states to the union.

The Northwest Ordinance resolved the question of slavery in the Northwest Territory.
