Using comprehension strategies, the meaning of excerpt from chapter 1 of The Scarlet Letter is “The prison and cemetery were built early, with the cemetery expanding in size from its original plot (A).” Comprehension Strategies are a set of steps that the reader uses to understand the text well.

EXPLANATION

Comprehension strategies is often applied by educational institutions such as a school for its students. Approximately, there are seven steps in comprehension strategies. One of them is “identify word and sentence meanings in order to decode the text.” This step is the one that is applied to answer the question.

Here are the following steps to answer the questions above:

- “the forefathers of Boston had built the first prison-house”

- “they marked out the first burial-ground, on Isaac Johnson's lot, and round about his grave”

Based on those two key sentences, it can be concluded that the founders of Boston built a prison house and burial-ground at that time, which later became part of the history of the city of Boston.

• “which subsequently became the nucleus of all the congregated sepulchers in the old church-yard of King's Chapel.”

The word subsequently means the continuation (by the next generation) that made a funeral around the tomb of Isaac Johnson, continued what was done by their ancestors.

<span>A is the correct answer. It can be observed from the fact that the forefathers of Boston built both buildings that they were created early on in the city’s history. The cemetery’s expansion is clear from the subsequent congregation of sepulchres, or tomb monuments, around the grave of Isaac Johnson.</span>

Read the excerpt below from the poem “Ulalume” by Edgar Allan Poe and answer the question that follows.
Deffense [45]
Alliteration: "<span> as the scoriac Rivers that Roll— As the lavas that Restlessly Roll" (the 'r' sound is being repeated at the beginnings of words)
</span><span>
assonance: "</span><span>In the ultimate climes of the pOle— That grOan as they rOll dOwn MOunt Yaanek In the realms of the bOreal pOle" (the vowel sound "o" is repeated throughout the words)
</span><span>
consonance: "o</span><span>f CypreSS, with PSyche, my Soul" (the consonant "s" sound is repeated at the beginning and ends of words)

These sound devices have a sing-songy effect on the poem which helps create the mystical and mysterious mood. It almost lulls the reader into a type of trance through the memory of the narrator.
</span><span>
imagery: "</span><span>As the lavas that restlessly roll Their sulphurous currents down Yaanek"
</span>
This strong imagery helps to bring the memories to life for the reader  and helps the reader relate to the mindset and the emotions of the narrator by providing images to compare them to. Comparing his heart bursting to the way lava flows down the side of a mountain creates a strong image.

mixas84 [53]

Answer:

Horrendous - extremely unpleasant, horrifying, or terrible

Explanation:

Looking at the information here, it can be interpreted that the world could face extremely unpleasant consequences should we not do something to help the population of the bees that are already being threatened by the collapse of their colony.

These flying insects are very important to us because they form part of our food chain. When they die, it means we may likely face the loss of food and that would be something very unpleasant.
