Further explanation

Lines from "A Psalm of Life"

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,

Still, like muffled drums, are beating

Funeral marches to the grave.

"A Psalm of Life adheres to a strict ABAB rhyme scheme throughout each stanza.

The first stanza of "Auspex"

My heart, I cannot still it,

Nest that had song-birds in it;

And when the last shall go,

The dreary days to fill it,

Instead of lark or linnet,

Shall whirl dead leaves and snow.

"Auspex" has AABAAB, followed by CDECDE CDECDE in the next two stanzas.

Both poems "A Psalm of Life" and "Auspex" have in common, they make reference to the heart. "Psalm" suggests that the passage of time cannot defeat the soul, while "Auspex" indicates that it can.

Psalm of Life argues that soul continues after death

Each stanza in "Auspex" show the different stages of a natural process. The main idea of the first stanza of "Auspex" is although I cannot slow myself down right now, one day my heart will stop beating so quickly, and I will slow down
