Bertie, a truck driver, is told by the boss, Percy, to quickly deliver a load of steel and to get to the location within an hour

. Bertie replied, "That's impossible—I'd have to go 90 miles per hour to do that." Percy said, "Well, you'd best get started." Not surprisingly, Bertie was stopped by a highway patrol officer and fined for both speeding and reckless driving. At court, Bertie told the judge that the ruling should be "not guilty" because Bertie was only acting upon orders of Bertie’s boss. Is this reasoning correct?

This reasoning is not correct. In this example, Bertie's boss convinces him of breaking the law in order to fulfill his order. Bertie does so, even though he is aware that this is a wrong action (this is clear from his surprised reaction and reluctance to carry out the order). However, even though Percy asked him to perform the action, Bertie would still be considered to be guilty due to the fact that he was ultimately the one who carried out an action that was illegal and dangerous.

Tan uses an allusion to the familiar nursery rhyme about the cow jumping over the moon to help readers experience what the character is feeling.

Tan uses imagery to give the reader a mental picture of the main character's experiences with her mother.

Tan uses characterization, developing Jing-mei by describing how she responds to her mother's actions.

Hope this helps!

Read the following paragraph and answer the question that follows. "A tiger dies and leaves a skin. A man dies and leaves a name
Paul [167]
Man has the ability to reason.

Why I don't think the others are correct:

The author's focus never indicates a singular person. While the author did mention the tiger's ability to terrorize, the author does not go as far to claim the tiger is a menace.

Which statements describe Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language? Check all that apply.
qwelly [4]

Answer:

The answers are:

It includes over forty thousand definitions.

It offers excerpted examples of the words in literature.

Explanation:

<em>Samuel Johnson's </em>"A Dictionary of the English Language" was regarded as the best dictionary of its day. It was published in 1755, thus this makes the first choice (It was published in the late 1800s) incorrect.

I<u>t has around 42,773 words with their meanings</u>, thus this makes the second choice (It includes over forty thousand definitions) correct. The dictionary which "only" contained 40,000 words was prepared by <em>Nathan Bailey.</em>

The dictionary only shows the<u> meaning of the words and "not their origin."</u> Thus, this makes the third choice (It includes information about word origin) incorrect.

The meaning of the words are illustrated with the help of quotations (excerpts) relating to literature. So, this makes the last choice (It offers excerpted examples of the words in literature) correct. Examples of the quotations comes from Shakespeare, Dryden and Milton.

However, the dictionary doesn't have a preface written by William Shakespeare. Thus, this makes the fourth choice (It has a preface written by William Shakespeare) incorrect.
