Read the passage from Elizabethan Etiquette.

<em>The Elizabethan era, the years between 1558-1603 when Elizabeth I reigned as Queen of England, is known for its emphasis on courtly manners. The most esteemed book on the subject was Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier, also referred to as The Courtier. The Courtier was translated from its original Italian into English in 1561, and its rules were carefully followed by the highest-ranking courtiers of the day.</em>

Question: According to the passage, society first began to closely follow etiquette rules when:

Options:

  • Elizabeth I started her reign as Queen of England.
  • Queen Elizabeth read Castiglione’s The Courtier.
  • Castiglione’s The Courtier was translated into English.
  • Manners became linked with the Italian and English courts.

Answer: The correct answer is: <u>Castiglione’s The Courtier was translated into English. </u>

Explanation: The passage mentions the following: ''<em>The Courtier was translated from its original Italian into English in 1561, and its rules were carefully followed by the highest-ranking courtiers of the day.'' </em>Based on this, we know that society began to carefully and closely follow etiquette rules when The Courtier was translated into English. Lines 9-12 compare the "ashes of youth" to _____. a deathbed twilight fire youth
maw [93]

Answer:

Compares the "ashes of youth" to a "youth"

Explanation:

In these lines, the author tends to compare himself to the glowing remnants of a fire, which lie on the ashes that once let it burn; it will be extinguished as it sinks. It reveals that the youthful life is gone as ashes which happens to bring one on the deathbed. Therefore, it's comparing the life of a youth as ashes of youth which is gone as one on their deathbed which means inevitable death.

This is from Sonnet 73 by William Shakespeare.

On the east steps the Air Force Band in uniforms of Air Force blue is playing hard and loud, but - queer - the music doesn't qui
Bezzdna [24]

The original meaning (and still the formal meaning) of 'queer' is actually 'strange' or 'weird'. The excerpt is probably from a few decades ago or was written/spoken within a formal context. The new, more common meaning of 'queer' was born from old beliefs of a prejudiced society, where homossexual people were considered to be 'weird', therefore it's a pejorative term, and it's generally not received well by the homessexual community. As the word 'gay', which originally means 'glad', but with time had its meaning changed first colloquially, then gramatically ('glad' does not imply a pejorative connotation, however).

So the meaning of the stanza wouldn't change it the words mentioned were used intead.
