Franklin's quote refers to the importance of giving students the opportunity to get involved in the learning process. It is not only a matter of transmitting knowledge to them but instead getting them through experiences that allow them to truly incorporate knowledge.

Franklin was opposed to traditional education. He believed in the new methods of student-led experimentation and learning through individual experience. He advocated against slavery and chauvinism, considering that African-Americans and women should be permitted in school. He maintained that the purpose of true education was to serve mankind.
