How does the interaction between a carrier protein and the substance it transports resemble the interaction between an enzyme an

d its substrate?
Biology

Explanation:

These interactions are similar as they both involve:

  • the specific binding of a substrate or solute to a region of the protein
  • alteration of shapes or configuration of the protein as the chemical reaction or transport of substances occurs
  • the protein generally remains unchanged (configuration alterations are temporary)

Further Explanation:

Transport proteins spanning the plasma membrane facilitate the movement of ions and other complex, polar molecules which are typically prevented from moving across the membrane.

  • Carrier proteins bind specifically to molecules and move them down concentration gradients. Along with using facilitated diffusion, carrier proteins also use energy in the form of ATP and modify solute-specific regions, that aid in regulating ion exchange, through the hydrophobic layer of the plasma membrane.
  • Similarly, enzymes are proteins which catalyze reactions by acting on substrates in order to speed up reactions- like the breakdown of large polysaccharides by amylase. Substrates bind to a specific  region of the enzyme called an active site.
